Jim Carrey

Book Jim Carrey

He is best-known for his manic, slapstick performances in comedy films such as Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, Dumb & Dumber, The Mask, Liar Liar and Bruce Almighty. Carrey has also achieved critical success in dramatic roles in films such as The Truman Show, The Majestic, Man on the Moon and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.

Carrey was born in the town of Newmarket, Ontario to Percy and Kathleen Carrey; he has three older siblings, John, Patricia and Rita. His family is Catholic and had distant French Canadian roots (the original surname was Carré). A comedian from an early age, Carrey mailed his résumé to The Carol Burnett Show when he was 10 years old. The teachers in Carrey’s high school gave him a few minutes at the end of each school day to do a stand-up comedy routine for his classmates.

Carrey made his film debut in the short film Rubberface (1981). Four years later, he had a starring role in the dark comedy Once Bitten as Mark Kendall, a teen virgin who is pursued by a 400-year old vampire (Lauren Hutton). Carrey did not experience box office success until almost a decade later when he was cast in the starring role in the comedy Ace Ventura, Pet Detective, which premiered only months before In Living Color ended. The film was panned by critics, and helped earn him a 1994 Golden Raspberry Award nomination as Worst New Star. However, the film was a huge commercial success, as were Carrey’s two other starring roles, in The Mask and Dumb and Dumber, both released the same year.

Carrey has stated that he finds the prospect of reprising a character to be less enticing than taking on a new role, and fans say he rarely turns down roles because he enjoys trying new things.

Shannon Doherty

She came to notice when she was cast as Jenny Wilder in Little House on the Prairie, which she followed up with roles in films such as Heathers. She was then cast as the oldest Witherspoon sibling, Kris, on the family drama Our House, which ran from 1986 to 1988. Shannen then went on to appear in an episode of Magnum P.I..

She starred on the Aaron Spelling-produced Beverly Hills 90210 for four years, from 1990 to 1994. Although her departure from the series was reportedly acrimonious, it didn’t stop Spelling from casting her in another series, Charmed. She left that series in 2001, after three years (rumors persisted that her departure was against her will, due to a feud with co-star Alyssa Milano). She hosted Scare Tactics on the Sci Fi channel until the 2004 season. She was a former regular on the failed TV series North Shore, a return to her prime-time soap roots.

Her private life has also been turbulent, with a six month marriage to Ashley Hamilton, son of George Hamilton. Doherty posed for a nine page pictorial in the December 2003 issue of Playboy magazine.

In 2005, she was cast in the new TV comedy Love Inc. but was dropped from the show just months before the debut in fall.

Doherty will star in her own show, Breaking Up With Shannen Doherty on the Oxygen network this summer.

Eric Bana began his career as a comedian in the sketch comedy series Full Frontal and gained critical recognition in the biopic Chopper (2000). After a decade of critically acclaimed roles in Australian television shows and films, Bana gained Hollywood’s attention after landing the role of American Delta Sergeant Norm ‘Hoot’ Gibson in Black Hawk Down (2001), before his breakthrough in 2003 when he was featured in the lead role as Bruce Banner in the Ang Lee directed film Hulk (2003).

He has become both an accomplished dramatic actor as well as comedian, and has received Australia’s highest film and television awards for his performances in Full Frontal and Chopper. Bana performs predominantly in leading roles in a variety of low-budget and major studio films, ranging from romantic comedies and drama to science fiction and action thrillers. His most popular films include Hulk (2003), Troy (2004), and Munich (2005).

For the role, Bana shaved his head and gained thirty pounds, he also spent two days with Read to perfect his mimicry. During filming he would arrive on set at four in the morning, spending five hours in makeup, being covered in Read’s trademark tattoos. Although the film received a limited release outside of Australia, Bana’s performance was met with positive reviews. American film critic Roger Ebert complimented Bana on his performance stating: "in a comedian named Eric Bana the filmmakers have found, I think, a future star…He has a quality no acting school can teach you and few actors can match. You cannot look away from him".[6][1] Chopper was a critical and financial success in Australia, and was nominated for Best Film at the Australian Film Institute Awards in 2001. Bana’s performance won the Australian Film Institute Award for Best Actor.

Bana is an advocate for the Mental Illness Fellowship, which works to increase the awareness of mental illness in Australia. In 2004, he appeared in several high profile advertisements for the fellowship.[18] Bana is also active in campaigns with the Australian Childhood Foundation and the Bone Marrow Donor Institute. Elijah Wood

A professional actor since the age of nine, Elijah Wood is best known for the role of Frodo Baggins in the Lord of the Rings trilogy. He took the stage in his elementary school’s rendition of the play The Sound of Music. The following year, he graduated to the title character of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. Wood also served as choir boy during the production of See How They Run, produced by the Marion Creative Council.

Making his film debut with a minor part in Back to the Future II in 1989, Wood landed a succession of subsequent larger roles and became a critically acclaimed child actor. His performance in The War gained him a nomination by the YoungStar Awards (for which he was nominated five times and won once), and Roger Ebert said in his review of the film that "Elijah Wood has emerged, I believe, as the most talented actor in his age group in Hollywood history."

Wood modeled and did local commercials before moving with his family to Los Angeles in 1988. It was there that Wood got his first break, a small role in a Paula Abdul video. Film work almost instantly followed, with a bit part in the 1989 Back to the Future II. It was Wood’s role as Aidan Quinn’s son in Barry Levinson’s 1990 Avalon (the third film in the Baltimore trilogy containing Diner [1982] and Tin Men [1987]) that first gave Wood attention, as the film received widespread critical acclaim and was nominated for four Academy Awards. After a small part in the Richard Gere potboiler Internal Affairs (1990), Wood secured his first starring role in Paradise (1991), in which he played a young boy who brings estranged couple Melanie Griffith and Don Johnson back together. He received good reviews for his performance — some said it was one of the best things about the film — and from there went on to co-star with Mel Gibson and Jamie Lee Curtis in Forever Young and in Radio Flyer (both 1992).

He completed filming the independent Emilio Estevez film, Bobby in December 2005 alongside Anthony Hopkins, Demi Moore, Sharon Stone and Lindsay Lohan. His next projects include Day Zero, a drama about the draft with Chris Klein and Ginnifer Goodwin, and Vamp with Elisha Cuthbert that he will be filming in July 2006 (but not yet confirmed). Wood leads the cast of the animated movie Happy Feet which will be release in November 17, also stars Nicole Kidman, Hugh Jackman, Brittany Murphy and Robin Williams. Recent news reports, confirmed by Wood, have cited his plans to portray Iggy Pop in a biopic on the singer’s life, slated to begin production in 2006.

Wood was born January 28, 1981, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, the middle of three children to Warren and Debbie Wood; he has English, Irish, German and Polish ancestry and was raised a Catholic. As a child, he took piano lessons from Marlene Loftsgaarden in Cedar Rapids. He was nicknamed Elijah "Spark Plug" because he was a maniacally energetic child, and also "Monkey" because he liked to climb things. He has a brother, Zack, a video game producer and seven years his senior, as well as sister, Hannah, younger by three years who is a poet and actress and has had small roles in a number of his films.
